Martial Arts as Physical Education for Homeschooled Children

Physical education is required for students including homeschoolers in many states. This requirement can be used to help our children achieve something greater.

How? With martial arts lessons specialized in children.

Many children simply don’t get enough exercise as they move into the teen years. Martial arts can be one tool to encourage more activity.

But beyond achieving a better physical condition, we can strengthen other attitudes as they are:

  • ​A positive mental attitude
  • Self-control and discipline
  • Confidence
  • How to be respectful, courteous, and disciplined
  • Organizational skills

Through martial arts, we achieve the main objective of body and soul strengthening together as one.

This following video shows a group of children between the ages of 5 to 12 years participating in different activities that help the development of an exemplary child.

Goal settings can improve motivation and inspire children to focus on the work to reach their objective. It is this I recommend martial arts to achieve a better physical and mental condition.

We all need physical activity to stay healthy and get our hearts pumping. Getting a good workout boosts endorphins which help with moods. Staying active will also increase your child’s strength and help with body image.

When I get a great workout, I just feel better and more comfortable with my body, in general. I want my kids to feel that way, too!

These lessons are offered in the morning and help the children to have a better attitude towards their parents and towards academic assignments.

Requirements you must follow

What do you need to include martial arts as part of your child homeschool? You need to check with the district on their requirements but the State of Florida for instance, you need to create a Portfolio for each academic subject and that includes electives.

It may include a syllabus, a log of what of assignments completed or field trips focusing on the subject and samples of the child’s work. In other words, you create a scrapbook of your child’s year for each subject.

For instance, in our martial arts academy, we included a weekly plan that can be used part of a physical education or elective homeschool portfolio.


 Week 1

  • Warm up
  • Stretching
  • Learn attention, bow, and ready position
  • How to punch
  • Single, double, and triple punch
  • Hook punch, uppercut and backfist
  • Mat chat – Respecting ourselves, parents, teachers, and others

Week 2

  • Warm up
  • Stretching
  • Review punches
  • Begin basic kicks
  • Wind drills
  • Mat chat – 4 wheels of health

Week 3

  • Warm up
  • Stretching
  • Review kicks
  • Learn pivot kicks
  • Strength drills
  • Mat chat – Mental Fitness (Intelligence and Positive Thinking)

Week 4

  • Warm up
  • Stretching
  • Review punches, kicks
  • Straight kicks
  • Begin Horse-riding stance with blocks
  • Mat chat – Moral Fitness (Taking responsibility and doing the right thing)

Week 5

  • Warm up
  • Stretching
  • Review
  • Strikes
  • Mat chat – I believe in myself

Week 6

  • Warm up
  • Stretching
  • Review all past curriculum
  • Prepare for testing
  • Mat chat – Yes, I can/Never give up

 As you can see, each week has objectives that lead to the testing. Through the weeks, you might want to take pictures, videos, or if there are handouts, you want to save these to include in the Portfolio. In our martial arts academy, we will give you a sheet that will have the objective of the test, areas of testing, and a grade with comments and recommendations.

The purpose of the Portfolio is to show growth through the course. Students need to dedicate time to any other course included in a homeschool program. Practice, watching videos, attending tournaments, extra practice are examples of what to be included in a homeschool log.

At the end of the year, the Portfolio should demonstrate the journey and growth of an academic year of martial arts.
